GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of optimizing a brand's content and technical structure so it gets cited by language models — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini — when users ask questions about its industry or category.
It does not replace SEO. It extends it. SEO puts you in Google's results. GEO puts you inside the answer the model gives the user, without the user clicking any result.
Why it matters today
25% of searches now happen inside AI interfaces — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot. One in four Google results shows a generated AI Overview, citing only a handful of sources. The discovery conversation has moved from the ranking to the summary.
When a buyer asks ChatGPT “what are the best ERPs for an SMB in LATAM?”, the answer is not determined by your Google position. It's determined by how citable your content is for the model: how clear your brand entity is, how structured your data is, how well you define your own category.
SEO vs GEO: the precise difference
They share fundamentals. Both reward authority, content quality, semantic relevance and technical speed. But they optimize for different outcomes:
- Classic SEOoptimizes for showing up in the top 10 of Google's SERP when someone searches your category.
- GEO optimizes for being cited inside the answers generated by LLMs when someone asks a question about your category.
Metrics also change. SEO measures clicks, impressions and average position. GEO measures citation frequency, mention quality and position within the answer — metrics that traditional tools still don't capture well.
How the citation flow works
A language model cites a brand through one of three paths:
- Real-time web search. Perplexity, ChatGPT with browsing, and Claude with web search query Google or Bing, read the top URLs, and assemble the answer. Classic SEO matters here — if you rank, they read you.
- Training data. Models like GPT, Claude or Gemini are trained on datasets that include Common Crawl, Wikipedia, GitHub and editorial sources. If your brand is represented there, the model knows you without searching. This is the medium-term play.
- Tools and RAG. In enterprise implementations, the model connects to a controlled knowledge base via MCP or retrieval-augmented generation. Applies to B2B cases where the model queries curated documentation.
The technical levers that move the needle
Optimizing for GEO is not a single change. It's a set of levers that compound:
- Schema.org well implemented — Organization, Service, FAQPage, DefinedTerm, Article. An LLM reads entities, not decorative markup. If your schema says exactly what you are, what you offer and who you serve, the model understands you better.
- llms.txt at root — a plain markdown file that summarizes your site for AI crawlers. Models that support it read it first, before parsing your HTML.
- Permissive robots.txtfor AI bots — most sites block GPTBot, Claude-Web and PerplexityBot fearing “content theft”. If your goal is to be cited, you want the opposite.
- Direct-answer first — the first 50 words of each page should answer the implicit question. LLMs cite the block that resolves, not the one that surrounds it.
- Category glossary— if you build an authoritative glossary of your industry's terms, the LLM uses you as a source when someone asks for a definition.
- Backlinks from sources AIs read — Wikipedia, GitHub, Medium, Substack, Reddit. Those are the nodes inside training datasets.
What to do today
If your brand is just starting to think about GEO, a reasonable order is:
- Diagnostic.Ask ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini about your brand and category. Note whether they cite you, what they say, and which competitors they pick. That's your baseline.
- Technical foundation. Correct schema, llms.txt, permissive robots, fresh sitemap, hreflang if multi-language, clean Core Web Vitals.
- Editorial rewriting. Direct-answer first on key pages. FAQs per page. An open glossary of your category.
- Authority activation.Quality backlinks, Wikipedia if notability justifies, presence on GitHub if you're B2B tech, content on Medium or Substack.
- Continuous monitoring. A weekly query to the four engines, logged and compared over time.
None of these levers guarantees an LLM will cite you. Stacked and sustained, they shift the probability. The difference between brands AIs will recommend in 2027 and brands that will be invisible is being decided today.
The frequent mistake: treating GEO as a trick
GEO is not a surgical optimization done once. It's a shift in editorial criterion. It implies writing thinking about how a model will read it, not just how a human will. It implies measuring citations, not just clicks. It implies building authority in sources AIs already consult, not just getting traffic from Google.
The brands that understand this early are building the most defensible asset of the next cycle: being the answer when someone asks an AI about the category.
